Project Team Wānanga in Takapō, December 2024
The project team travelled to Takapō (Tekapo) for two days in December for a wānanga (Māori method of learning and teaching that emphasises open discussion, sharing different perspectives, and acquiring knowledge) on project progress and to formulate ideas for the upcoming mahi.
Takapō lies in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, which spans 4,367 km², and was officially recognised by the International Dark-Sky Association as an International Dark Sky Reserve in June 2012. Situated in New Zealand's Mackenzie District on the South Island, it was the largest reserve of its kind globally at the time of designation and the only one located in the Southern Hemisphere.
The wānanga included the Takapō dark sky stargazing trip and a visit to the “Dark Sky Experience” exhibition, both of which created an excellent setting for some in-depth project discussions and planning for future activities.
